What size tree is required for building?
Most trees will be able to support a structure to some degree. Of course larger trees will be up to the task even without ground stanchions. Our designers will be able to come up with a solution, be it in one single tree or using several, and if ground supports are required they can be put in discreetly and in a way that will compliment the overall design.
What maintenance is required?
The materials that are used are typically treated woods however that doesn’t mean they will last a lifetime. Sun, wind, rain and snow will take its toll which is the reason why we recommend an optional maintenance plan. Although tree growth is factored in to the design it will need to be monitored after a few years to ensure it does not impede on the tree house structure. As well as peace of mind that your tree house is structurally safe, simple modifications, new protective treatments and renewals will bring longevity to your construction.
Does it affect the tree?
If the screws that secure the structure to the tree are absolutely tight then no fungal spores or rot can penetrate. Adhesives that expand can be used to ensure a water tight seal and prevent any deterioration. Further more, the quick setting characteristics prevent transportation of hazardous substances into the core of the tree allowing for unrestricted growth.
Is it affected by the wind?
The tree house of course will be affected by the wind in the same way that the trees are. This will be amplified depending on height and whether any shelter is afforded. A simple yet effective way of preventing damage is to allow the house ‘to move’ with the tree, thus preventing self destruction that would occur if the construction were fixed. Even with tie-in points to the ground the tree house design will remain flexible.
Do we need planning consent?
Planning is pretty much guaranteed these days but there are exceptions. Generally it will be required if it is to be used for commercial use, sleeping in, over a certain height, within a certain distance of adjoining boundary or within a conservation area such as a National Park. Applications can take around 8 weeks so plan early! If you would sooner leave it to the professionals then we can act as agents on your behalf.
How much will it cost?
Costs will vary depending on the size and complexity of the project. Typically, for small, enclosed children’s treehouses, prices start from £10,000. Open constructions with walkways and platforms begin at £20,000. For medium-sized builds with higher specifications, prices start from approximately £45,000. Commercial ventures, such as rentals, will naturally incur higher costs to comply with building regulations. Remember, all our builds are bespoke and expertly crafted using high-quality materials which will stand the test of time.
How long does it take?
Time scales vary depending on size of the project and the client specifications such as additional requirements for suspension bridges and zip lines. Much of the preparatory work can be done from our workshop to minimize time on site. To reduce any possible disruptions the build can also be done in stages if it is preferred.
